If you already have Original Medicare, you have the option of enrolling into a Medicare Advantage plan (part C). Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private health insurance companies and take over Medicare part A and Medicare part B from the government.( you still need to pay for your part B) These private plans must cover everything that Original Medicare covers but often provide lower co-payments, lower deductibles and many of the private Advantage plans include benefits for dental, vision, hearing, acupuncture and more. The plan will also include prescription drug coverage.
You must be enrolled and stay enrolled in Medicare Part A and B even though you have enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare will pay the private health insurance company on your behalf for the risk of insuring you. This is how the Medicare Advantage plans can get funded and operate. When you go see a doctor you now present your Medicare Advantage Plan ID card instead of your Original Medicare card. All Medicare Advantage plans will have copays, deductibles, network providers, prescription drug coverage and all benefits outlined so make sure you understand what plan is best for your specific situation.
Most advantage plans are either HMO or PPO where the HMO plan normally requires you to stay within network and you will need to coordinate referrals with your primary care physician, A PPO network allows you to see doctors that are outside of the network ( More flexibility).
